IOC joins Australia’s leading marine bioproducts summit

In September, our CEO, Dr Alexandra Leeper, travelled to Brisbane, Queensland, to join Marine BioConnect 25. The summit is Australia’s leading event for marine bioproducts and industry. Marine Bioproducts CRC hosted the gathering, which brought together researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders to explore sustainable value from ocean resources.

100% Fish and the blue economy

Alexandra spoke about the 100% Fish Programme and the work of the Iceland Ocean Cluster. With her background in aquaculture and circular economy, she explained how Iceland is making progress in the full utilisation of marine resources. Moreover, she showed how side streams can become high-value products. This creates new business opportunities while reducing waste and strengthening the blue economy.

Global collaboration in seafood innovation

The discussions in Brisbane reflect a wider global movement. From Iceland to Australia, and from the United States to Denmark, clusters and research institutions are accelerating innovation in seafood utilisation. As a result, more organisations are joining forces to create value, cut waste, and protect marine ecosystems.

Marine BioConnect 25 also featured leading voices such as Dr Pia Winberg (Phyco Health), Rosanna Angus (tourism consultant and Bardi Jawi woman), and Daniel Abrahams (CEO, Marine Bioproducts CRC). Together, these speakers highlighted the many ways science, industry, and community can connect to drive ocean innovation.

We are proud that the Iceland Ocean Cluster and the 100% Fish Programme are part of this dialogue. In addition, linking ideas and initiatives across continents supports our mission: to inspire collaboration and innovation for a sustainable ocean economy.
