The blue and marine sectors are essential to the economies and sustainability efforts of the Nordic countries. However, for these industries to thrive long-term, they must embrace inclusivity and gender equality.
Earlier this year, Nordregio released the report Ensuring Gender Equality in the Nordic Blue Economy. This comprehensive study sheds light on gender disparities in the sector, offering statistics and insights into the underrepresentation of women, particularly in decision-making roles. It highlights systemic challenges, such as sexist attitudes, harassment, and limited opportunities for women to enter and excel in these industries.
The report underscores the need for urgent action, including:
- Encouraging more women to enter the blue economy.
- Increasing visibility of female role models.
- Expanding data collection on gender disparities.
- Mitigating and addressing sexual harassment in the workplace.
Moving from Insights to Action
To explore how these recommendations can be implemented, an upcoming webinar will bring together experts, researchers, and industry leaders from across the Nordic region. The event will focus on translating Nordregio’s findings into actionable steps, combining research with real-world experiences and policy interventions to build a more inclusive and sustainable blue economy.
