As the Arctic Algae conference and exhibition just ended yesterday – 31st of August 2023 – in Harpa (Reykjavík, Iceland), it is now time to reflect on everything that was covered during this beautiful event organised by Raekt, the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA) and the Algae Association of Iceland, with the Iceland Ocean Cluster (IOC) being a proud member of the latter.
The conference brought together algae scientists, industry professionals, algae enthusiasts and artists from around the world to explore the diverse world of algae, encompassing both micro- and macro algae. The conference delved into the practical applications of algae in various industries, such as productions of food and feed, nutraceuticals, biomaterials and textile but also carbon sequestration. Speakers and panelists discussed innovative uses of algae and their potential to address environmental challenges with the need to go beyond sustainability, focusing on leveraging the unique powers of algae to actively restore ecosystems.
The conference addressed policy and regulatory considerations surrounding algae cultivation and use with the presence of Svandís Svavarsdóttir – Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries – and Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, Minister of Environment. Discussions covered the legal framework, safety guidelines, and sustainability standards in the algae industry. Speakers and panelists shared insights into the challenges facing the algae industry and identified opportunities for growth and innovation.
At the Iceland Ocean Cluster, we know that fostering collaborations and partnerships can drive the algae industry forward hence our participation in the Arctic Algae conference and exhibition. It was the perfect time for us to introduce the Iceland Eco-Business Park during the last session of the conference and share why we believe it is a great opportunity for the algae industry in Iceland.
Overall, we loved the Arctic Algae conference and exhibition: it provided a comprehensive platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and the exploration of algae’s potential to address global challenges and contribute to sustainable solutions across various sectors. It served as a hub for thought for leaders and professionals passionate about harnessing the power of algae for a more sustainable future.
