We are delighted to welcome Axel Olafsson who will be joining us for an internship. With a multi-disciplinary background including a BSc in Psychology and a MSc in Computer Science, Axel bridges human and artificial intelligence. Now pursuing data science and machine learning, Axel strives to be at the forefront of innovation.

Previously he interned at an AI-powered data-analytics software company, conducting data analysis and building visualizations. At the Iceland Ocean Cluster, he will employ those skills to research AI applications in the blue economy worldwide. Axel is excited to take part in an organization where such emphasis is placed on innovation and sustainable practices. He’s particularly interested in exploring how modern innovations in AI can advance sustainable ocean industries and contribute to Iceland’s position as a leader in blue economy innovation.

Being from Iceland and Germany while having grown up in Luxembourg and England, Axel brings an international perspective to his work. Knowing that collaboration is required to face problems much bigger than oneself, he was drawn to the Cluster, which embodies this same collaborative spirit.

Outside of work, Axel is an avid basketball player and traveller, having organized pickup games and connecting with people in India, Vietnam, Nepal, and Taiwan.
