Two weeks ago, our CEO, Alexandra Leeper, made a round trip of Ireland to learn about developments in the Irish blue bioeconomy.
During the week, Alexandra travelled to Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, and Killybegs, gaining insight into Ireland’s whitefish, salmon and pelagic processing industries and learning about initiatives focused on seaweed utilisation, seafood biorefining, and collaboration across the blue bioeconomy. She visited the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) and Atlantic Technological University (ATU). It was a wonderful discovery of the opportunities and challenges present in the Irish blue bioeconomy hosted by BIM (Bord Iascaigh Mhara). There is huge potential in Ireland in fostering greater collaboration to support a sustainable blue bioeconomy and creating novel value.
Ireland has extensive expertise in pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, and the life sciences sector. Currently, there is little crossover between these sectors and the seafood industry. However, there is significant potential to create unique and high-value applications from seafood resources through collaboration with the biomedical sectors.
